About Crumbs Factory
Crumbs Factory is an independent guide to the world's baked goods: where they come from, what goes into them and how they are made.
What you will find here
Each guide covers one baked good in depth: a description, its history with a timeline of key dates, ingredients, the method step by step, what a well-made example looks like, regional variations, common problems and fixes, serving and storing advice, and a nutrition overview. Country pages collect the baked goods each country is best known for.
How we write
History is where baking writing most often goes wrong, so we check it. Dates, names and attributions are checked against published sources, and every page lists those sources at the bottom, with links where an online version exists. Where origin stories are disputed or turn out to be legends, such as the claims that a monk invented the pretzel or that Catherine de' Medici brought the macaron to France, we say so and describe what the evidence supports. Baking methods, temperatures and ratios reflect standard professional and home-baking practice and are given as guides, not guarantees, because flour, ovens and kitchens vary.
Nutrition and allergens
Nutrition figures are approximate and come from published food-composition data. They are for general interest only. If you have an allergy or a medical dietary need, check the ingredients of the product you are eating.
Languages
Pages are published in English, and some are also available in Spanish. More guides and languages are being added.
